DAY 1

Highlights of Athens, Cape Sounion, and Temple of Poseidon

On the first day of this 2 Day Tour of Athens and the surrounding area, you’ll be seeing the highlights of Athens and the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion. Your guide will meet you at your hotel after you finish breakfast, and explain the events of the day. Then they will take you to your first destination, which is the Acropolis.

On the walk up to the Acropolis Hill our guide will point out places of interest and also tell tales from Greek mythology along the way. You will soon discover that our guides are very kid friendly, and they will keep the little ones entertained and engaged with interactive games and quizzes throughout the day.

Once you have reached the top of the Acropolis our guide will then show you around the most significant structures such as the Parthenon. They will also point out some great places to take photos, and the views out over the city of Athens from up here are spectacular. Explaining the significance behind the structures and also the fortified Acropolis, the guide will once more weave in tales from Greek myths and legends.

When the time at the top of the Acropolis is over, you will make your way to the Acropolis museum for the second part of the morning. We know that sometimes kids and museums don’t mix well, but in this case your kids will surely love the experience there. The Acropolis museum is one of the most modern in Greece. It brilliantly displays some of the artefacts found at the Acropolis and our guide will fully explain them along with their connection to Greek mythology. There may even be the chance for some interactive games and quizzes as you walk through the museum.

It is at this time of day thoughts turn to lunch! There are two choices here. The first, is if everyone is feeling hungry, to eat at a taverna in Athens. The second choice is to drive towards Cape Sounion and stop off at a taverna specializing in seafood along the way. Whichever option you choose, you are all sure to love the tasty traditional Greek cuisine! After lunch, there may even be time for a swim in the afternoon before reaching the Temple of Poseidon.

If your kids are fans of Percy Jackson they will know that Poseidon was the father of Percy Jackson and also the God of the sea. This Temple was dedicated to him several thousand years ago. It is an excellent example of ancient Greek architecture and is also thought to form part of a sacred triangle with two other temples. One of those other temples is the Parthenon which you will have visited earlier in the day.

Our guide will show you around the site telling stories from Greek mythology which relate to the temple and also the Aegean Sea. Once the sun starts to set you can find yourselves a nice quiet spot to watch the sun go down. The sunset at the Temple of Poseidon is quite magnificent, and it is easy to see why the ancient Greeks thought this place was so special. Once the sun has finally disappeared into the waters, it is time to return to Athens. It’s been a fun first day, and there is more to come tomorrow!

DAY 2

Option 1 - Visit the Oracle at Delphi

Your destination for the second day of the two-day mythology tour is to visit the Oracle at Delphi! This was one of the most important places in the ancient Greek world. In fact they often described it as the navel or centre of the world. Will the Oracle have a prophecy for you?

You will be collected from your hotel once you have finished breakfast and then be taken by private minivan to the UNESCO world heritage site of Delphi, which is about 2.5 hours away. In ancient times people would travel from hundreds of miles away to make a pilgrimage to Delphi and listen to whatever prophecies the Oracle had to tell them. Often the Oracle would be consulted before important States matters such as war, new building or colonies were decided upon. Percy Jackson fans will also recognize that the Oracle played a role in Rick Riordan’s books.

Our fully licensed expert guide will show you around both the world class Museum and the UNESCO archaeological site of Delphi. They will explain in a way that everyone can understand how important the site was to the peoples of the ancient world. They will also weave in tales from Greek mythology as well as mentioning some of the times the Oracle appeared in the Percy Jackson books. Your kids may even know this already!

Delphi has a beautiful backdrop and quite often there seems to be a hidden energy. As you walk around the site you will discover the ancient Stadium, temples and also the place where the Oracle herself was said to live. The kids can let their imaginations run wild here and everyone will learn a little bit more about Delphi and its role in Greece whilst soaking up the scenic views. Filled with inspiration of legends and Greek Gods, you will have a taste of some of the mysteries of the ancient world, and have the chance to talk all about them on the drive back to your hotel in Athens.

DAY 2

Option 2 - Epidaurus, Mycenae and Nafplion

Alternatively on Day 2 you can visit three of the highlights in the Peloponnese during your family trip to Greece – Epidaurus, Mycenae, and Nafplion.

We will collect you from your hotel after breakfast in a private vehicle and then make our way towards the Peloponnese region of Greece. Our first stop will be at Corinth canal. This amazing engineering feat is something to be admired and also makes a nice break on the journey. Once you have taken some photos here, we will continue the short drive on to the archaeological site of Epidaurus.

This large complex has two outstanding features. The first is the incredible theatre, where you can quite literally hear a pin drop from the seats high above. The second is the UNESCO rated Sanctuary of Asklepios. Your kids may know that Asklepios/Asclepius was the God of Medicine from the Percy Jackson books.

Our guide will show your around this fascinating site, and will demonstrate just how amazing the acoustics are in the theatre. If anyone in your family has a good singing voice, this would be the perfect place to show the world! As always, our guide will mix in fun, games, and Greek myths to help bring the site alive for you all. On leaving Epidaurus, the next stop is Mycenae.

In the past Mycenae was perhaps the strongest of all the city states in ancient Greece. This is where the legendary King Agamemnon surveyed his domain and felt invincible. It is a bronze age fortified city with huge Cyclopean walls, and was said to have been founded by Perseus. It is also linked with events in the war of Troy.

In the company of our passionate expert guide you will have an opportunity to explore this ancient city including the outstanding burial tombs. Recounting stories from the Trojan War, the deeds of Achilles and other tales from Greek mythology, our guide will help everyone take a step back into its glorious past.

Your final destination of the day is the pretty town of Nafplion. This is often described as one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, and is a nice place to end the tour. Our guide will take you on a leisurely stroll through its quaint streets and alleyways, pointing out some of the hidden landmarks and taking you to places which have the best views. They can also show you where to get the best ice cream in town!

Nafplion is a wonderful place to explore on foot, and there is a sense of picturesque romance in the air. It’s also a great town on which to finish the tour, and so boarding the vehicle once more, it is time to return to Athens.
